Science & Methodology
How we interpret genetic data — and what we can't tell you.
Our Approach to Interpretation
Genetiqo provides educational insights based on published genetic research. We aim to translate complex science into understandable information while being transparent about uncertainty.
Association, Not Causation
We report genetic associations, not determinations. Having a variant doesn't guarantee an outcome — it reflects statistical patterns observed in research populations.
Probabilistic, Not Binary
Genetics is about probabilities, not certainties. Most traits are influenced by dozens or hundreds of genes, plus environment, lifestyle, and chance.
Context Matters
A variant's effect can depend on other genes (epistasis), environmental factors, and even which population was studied. We note these limitations.
How We Select Variants
Not all genetic variants are created equal. We focus on well-studied markers with reasonable evidence from peer-reviewed research.
- Published in peer-reviewed journals
- Replicated in multiple studies where possible
- Documented in curated databases (SNPedia, ClinVar, etc.)
- Functional biological mechanism understood or plausible
- Educational value without overstating clinical utility
What Genetics Can't Tell You
It's important to understand the limits of genetic interpretation:
No Diagnosis
Genetiqo is not a medical device. We cannot diagnose, treat, or prevent any disease or condition. Genetic risk is not the same as having a disease.
No Predictions
We cannot predict your future health, athletic ability, or cognitive performance. Genes are one factor among many.
No Complete Picture
Consumer DNA tests cover only a fraction of the genome. Many important variants may not be included in your raw data file.
No Personalized Advice
Our interpretations are general educational information, not personalized medical or lifestyle recommendations.
Population Considerations
Most genetic research has been conducted in populations of European ancestry. This creates important limitations:
- Some variants may have different effects in different populations
- Some associations may not replicate across ancestries
- Reference frequencies may not apply to your background
- We note ancestry-specific caveats where known
- The field is actively working to improve diversity in research
Important Disclaimers
By using Genetiqo, you acknowledge:
- • This is an educational tool, not a medical device
- • Results should not be used for medical decisions without professional guidance
- • Genetic associations are probabilistic and context-dependent
- • We are not responsible for decisions made based on this information
